Started boxing as an amateur at age 14 and captured a number of amateur titles, including the Detroit. C.Y.O. and Michigan Golden Glove welterweight championship. He only lost 2 of 35 amateur contests. He hoped to turn pro at age 18, but the war with Korea broke out and he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He did some boxing while in the service, but was soon shipped out to to Korea and while fighting on the Korean battlefields was badly wounded in the right arm. He spent over a year in Army hospitals in Japan, and then was shipped back to the States, where he was again hospitalizes, and it was touch and go as the doctors attempted to save his arm. They were successful. Although little hope was given that he would be able to resume his boxing career, the doctor's felt that the exercise would be beneficial in helping the damaged tisues and muscles and told him to go ahead and start training. Within six months, he launched professional career. A speedy boxer and a fan favorite he boxed from 1955-1957 compiling a record of 18-3-1 (KO 3). Among his opponents Joey Giardello, Tiger Jones and Bobby Lane.
