Notes -
London lost on the last day of the season to miss out on the playoffs and cap a fall from the top of the North Sea division. Lack of hitting probably did for their season.
Paris won 10 in a row to make the most of London's collapse and secure their 6th playoff appearance in 7 seasons.
Hamburg scored 13 runs in an inning in their 18-3 victory over Budapest on September 15th.
Player Notes -
Outside of
Hubert Sittler's perfect game, there were a cluster of one-hitters.
Sake de Weerd and
Collins Gallagher both threw one for Barcelona and
Raynaud Mori had one for Lisbon (on the same day as the perfect game).
Gallagher was also impressive through the whole month of August, when his 4-0 record and 1.43 ERA won him the WL Pitcher of the Month trophy.
There was also a pitching performance of note from
Cosmo Popotas (Paris), who dismissed 31 Madrid Hawks without conceding a run as part of his club's 4-2 win in 15 innings.
July's Pitching awards went to Paris reliever
Mojslaw Szasz and Oslo starter
Jame McIlwraith. The Hitting awards went to Barcelona's
Stefan Fingerlos and Sofia rookie
Helmuth Rainmayr.
Fingerlos later won the same award for August and put together one of the best season's in EBL history. He won the batting title with a .361 average, hit 40 homers and drove in 131 runs.
Ali Isosomppi (Madrid) was 4/4 with 3 HR and 6 RBI against Barcelona on July 15th as his team won 8-4.
Bohdan Leibovic (Lisbon) won the WL Pitcher of the Month for July with a 6-0 month and looked a threat to break the single season record for wins when he won his 20th game in early August. He eventually had to settle for the WL Pitching Triple Crown with a 24-3 record, a 2.74 ERA and 243 strikeouts. He signed a contract extension in midseason to make him one of the highest paid pitchers in the game, He will get $26.6M over 6 years.
The EL's Pitcher of the Month was
Filip Kafyrin (Stockholm). The Hitter's of the Month were
Orlando Ventura (Glasgow) and
Vilfred Krak (Warsaw) - both of these were later felled by injuries (see below).
Agatone Dimas (Helsinki) and
Harlan McRea (Lisbon) both exceeded the 2000 hit mark and
Thomas Meinert (Copenhagen) joined the 300 Home Run club.
Meinert won the EL Hitter of the Month for August.
The EL Pitcher of the Month for the last full month of the season was Hamburg reliever
Lars Shanahan.
Significant Injuries -
Foppe Valckenburgh (Budapest) missed blocks of 4 weeks and 7 weeks with foot and rib injuries respectively.
22 year-old pitcher
Philander Paraskevolopoulos (Athens) was injured in early August and might miss sime time next season with a back problem. He was 14-5 with a 2.51 ERA in his first full season.
As mentioned above,
Vilfred Krak (Warsaw) and
Orlando Ventura (Glasgow) both missed the last 3 weeks of the season. They both had more than 30 homers on the season.
