ROMY ALVAREZ VS MIKE HANSON

Before running the bout I simmed their series four, five and six fights, just to see what their records would have been before they met. Both went 3-0 through those fights.

Romy

Shakes Qoboza KO5
Stanley Drexxon UD6
Omovo Okocha TKO2 (Okocha bad cut over left eye)

Mike

Omovo Okocha UD6 (59-54 x3) (Mike floored him at the end of the 3rd and midway through the 4th)
Delbert Craw UD6
Shakes Qoboza KO2 (Mike finally wins by KO!)

So, Romy came into the fight a perfect 6-0(3) while Mike was 5-0-1(1). They were fighting for 1st place in the group and here's what happened...

ROUND ONE

Romy controls most of the round, picking Mike off with a series of jabs and landing a couple of uppercuts. Mike does little through the first two minutes, throwing out a few punches but unable to get within scoring range. At the 2:15 mark Romy unloads with a big right hand and it lands flush on the jaw, bringing a howl of approval from the crowd. Mike looks hurt from it but stays on his feet. Ten seconds from the bell he lands his only substantial punch of the round, a left hook that snaps Romy's head around on his shoulders. Even the fans at ringside are stunned by it but Romy appears to have absorbed it and as the round ends he actually has Mike trapped in a neutral corner.

ROUND TWO

Twenty seconds in they go toe-to-toe for the first time in the fight and the crowd loves it! Mike appears to emerge with an edge, a left hook and a straight right bringing a concerned look to Romy's face. He responds strongly by banging away with an uppercut and then landing a hard counter left hook. Another uppercut, a pair of jabs and a flurry of shots to the body and head follow and already Romy has done some great work with still half the round to go. He peppers Mike with the jab and the Indianapolis native looks frustrated, to say the least. They trade blows again at the two minute mark and this time it looks to be an even exchange. Romy keeps on working, missing with a left hook and again with a punch thrown where he was a bit off balance. Mike just isn't quick enough to get near him. Moments before the bell Romy is off target with the jab but spears a right cross through Mike's defenses.

Two rounds down and Romy is clearly in control.

ROUND THREE

Romy fires a hard jab into Mike's face, pushing him backwards. That wasn't a probing punch, by any means. Forty seconds in and Mike snaps Romy's head back with a crushing uppercut! Romy looks hurt and he ties Mike up, giving himself precious seconds to clear his head. Mike is unable to follow up and Romy's legs are steady now. He moves around the ring beautifully, keeping out of harm's way. He traps Mike in a corner and fires away, a left-right salvo finding the mark before Mike responds with a hard right of his own! But Romy takes the exchange by planting a left hook flush on the chin. The middle section of the round is pretty uneventful but the final thirty seconds are fantastic. After Mike finds the mark with a crunching half-hook half-uppercut type punch Romy's retort is brilliant, a left-right-left flurry that brings anger to Mike's face and puts him off balance. Romy makes the most of the situation and unleashes a big uppercut! Mike is shaken and Romy tees off with a left hook that just misses as the bell sounds.

ROUND FOUR

The opening minute passes by with little to show for it but Romy stops Mike cold in his tracks with a hard jab and then another stinging one, Mike shaking his head in frustration. He tries to muscle inside but Romy wraps him up, the referee quick to separate them. Romy scores with a nice left-right salvo and then pushes Mike back to make some room for himself. He pounds away at Mike's head and body. My, this has been an ugly round for Mike. A minute to go and he has not really landed anything. He's looking pretty tired, to be truthful. Romy appears content to cruise through the remainder of the round until he finds the mark with a short hook on the inside shortly before the bell.

The shutout continues. My scorecard has Romy winning every round so far.

Mike comes out aggressively and gets the better of an early exchange but once again, the round swings in Romy's favour as it progresses. He works the body and then fires out that piston-like jab at Mike, keeping him on the backfoot. Mike manages to connect with the second of a pair of jabs but Romy's reply blows that out of the water, a flurry of shots with at least three of them connecting cleanly and staggering Mike. He retreats with a look of concern on his face. Near the two minute mark both guys unload left hooks at the same time but Romy's arrives first and Mike is put off balance by it. Romy digs another hook into his ribs and Mike winces from the pain. Mike is carrying his arms lower now and looks like a defeated man. Romy keeps working, hooking off the jab and then banging away at Mike's body once again. Mike lets his hands go and connects with a few shots but the impact has gone out of his punches, Romy simply absorbing them and moving on. Another great round for him.

ROUND SIX

The two combatants touch gloves and nod respectfully at the start of the final round. It turns out to be somewhat anti-climatic, Romy knowing he's won and Mike accepting that he's been defeated. The only highlight is a sweet uppercut that Mike lands midway through as Romy was coming in with a left hook. Earlier in the fight that shot might have planted Romy on his backside but here in the last round it simply unbalances him a little. Following that blow Romy goes on to finish the round the stronger of the two, peppering Mike with a series of jabs.

My final scorecard reads 59-55 to Romy. I gave Mike that final round on the basis of him landing the biggest punch in it and Romy taking his foot of the accelerator.

The judges that actually count are in unanimous agreement as to who the winner is. Romy takes the verdict by scores of 60-54 and 58-56 (twice). Unfortunately I forgot to record the punch totals but the Stats section of the game tells me that Romy landed 214 punches in the fight, his highest total through his HBF career.

And so Romy would have finished stage one of the QL's initial ranking tournament on top of group one with a 7-0(3) record while Mike would have been 2nd at 5-1-1(1).
I'll have to get around to running the remaining cards in the WC/1D tourneys and posting about them but that'll have to wait until next weekend. Right now I'd like to do some more work on the GPS and maybe punch out an MLB post.
