News and Notes:

The Mules have made a couple of moves leading up to the deadline, in attempts to bolster their pitching staff. First, they sent SS George Vickers and RP Wilford Cranford to the Portland Bulldogs in exchange for SP Jose Barron. Barron was 10-9 with a 3.78 ERA. In 21 starts, covering 140 1/3 innings, Barron allowed 141 hits and 46 walks with 152 strikeouts. Vickers, backing up Bobby Harris on the year, was hitting .280 with one HR and three RBI in 50 AB's, while Cranford was 3-2 with a 4.43 ERA. In 42 2/3 innings, Cranford had struck out 47 and walked 30.

The second move saw Newmarket send their starting CF Dennis Spears to the Danvers Falcons for P Chester Griffin. Griffin was 5-10 with a 4.39 ERA. In 24 starts, covering 155 1/3 innings, Chester has allowed 147 hits with 57 walks and 163 strikeouts. On top of that, Griffin is due to be paid just over $450,000 a year for the next three years. The price was steep in Spears, but the Mules will give the starting CF job to Scott Fullerton. Spears was hitting .304 with 13 HR and 31 RBI. He also stole 13 bases, while batting leadoff most of the year for Newmarket.

Gloucester sent 1B Terrance Bernard to the Portland Bulldogs in exchange for 30 year old reliever Javier Valenzuela. Bernard was hitting .301 with one HR and 16 RBI on the year, while Valenzuela was 2-3 with a 3.86 ERA and 2 saves at the time of the deal.
