National League

Boston Red Caps 10-3
Cleveland Blues 8-4
Detroit Wolverines 8-4
Troy Trojans 8-5
Chicago White Stockings 5-6
Providence Grays 4-8
Worcester Ruby Legs 3-9
Buffalo Bisons 2-9

With seven wins in their last eight games, Boston has taken the early lead over Cleveland, Detroit and Troy. This week, they will take on Troy and Providence. Cleveland probably has the best chance to move up this week because they will have four games against weak Buffalo. The hapless Bisons have hit only .179 through their first 11 games.

The most significant injury note so far in the National League is Harry Stovey of Worcester, who will be out for the next 1-2 months with an abdominal injury.

American Association

St. Louis Brown Stockings 7-4
Philadelphia Athletics 5-3
Louisville Eclipse 6-5
Cincinnati Red Stockings 5-4
Pittsburgh Alleghenys 4-5

The AA is still sorting out who its strong teams are going to be, but one thing seems perfectly clear: Baltimore will not be one of them. The Orioles have been awful in every way: bad hitting, bad pitching, bad defense.

Meanwhile, of the new young players, some standouts have emerged: all three members of Louisville's "local boy" outfield of Browning, Reccius and Wolf, Cincinnati's Bid McPhee and Charlie Comiskey of St. Louis.
