ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Tampa Bay Devil Rays today agreed to terms with a young pitcher they feel will be a dominant ace for their rotation and a potential Cy Young candidate down the road.
Pedro Martinez, 26, signed a six-year, $87.77 million contract with the Devil Rays today, after two months of negotiating with Tampa Bay and several other clubs. Martinez will be paid $13.86 million this season, and his annual salary will top out at $15.19 million in 2003, the final year of the contract. The deal also features a $1 million bonus if he wins the Cy Young award in any season.
Martinez owns a 62-37 record, and a 3.28 ERA and 891 strikeouts in 871 innings over his six-year career with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Montreal Expos. This past season, Martinez went 14-6 with a 2.88 ERA and 226 strikeouts in 31 starts with Montreal.
Martinez will head the Devil Rays staff.
