Leyritz hits walkoff homer
Gets five hits, including game-winner
May 17, 1998
HOUSTON - It took 11 pitchers, nearly four hours of action, and one big performance from Jim Leyritz to bring an end to this afternoon's game between the Astros and Atlanta Braves.
Leyritz went 5-for-6, including a walkoff home run in the 11th inning, as Houston topped Atlanta, 8-6, at the Astrodome.
"Unbelievable feeling," Leyritz said after the game. "I go out there when my name is called and do whatever I can. Today, it all fell into place."
Normally the Astros' backup to Greg Myers at backstop, Leyritz got the start today and hit sixth in the Houston lineup, behind thirdbaseman Kevin Millar. He responded with a single in the second off Scott Kamieniecki, a single in the third off reliever Terrell Wade, a RBI single off Mike Magnante in the eighth, a game-tying RBI single off Kerry Ligtenberg in the last of the ninth inning, and a two-out, walk-off two-run home run off Chris Brock in the 11th inning.
