Astros land closer Jones
Leyritz heading to Milwaukee
June 2, 1998

MILWAUKEE - The Brewers today announced they have traded veteran relief pitcher Doug Jones to the Houston Astros for catcher Jim Leyritz.

Jones, 40, returns to Houston where he had his finest season in the big leagues. In 1992, he went 11-8 with 36 saves and a 1.85 ERA in 80 appearances with the Astros. This year, Jones has gone 3-2 with 13 saves and a 4.28 ERA in 24 games.

Leyritz, 34, has hit .232 with three home runs and 14 RBI in 51 games with Milwaukee. He is signed through 2000 for less than $1 million annually. Jones is set to become a free agent at season's end. At his age, Jones is also a candidate for retirement this fall as well.

Astros manager Larry Dierker said Jones will serve as a setup man for closer Billy Wagner while Brewers skipper Phil Garner indicated Leyritz would take over as his team's regular catcher.

Doug Jones is returning to the Houston Astros, with whom he pitched for in 1992 and 1993.
