Notes -
The only real intrigue in the EL was which team would win the Black Sea division. Budapest came good in the last few weeks to clinch it. All three teams involved in the race were always going to be in the playoffs anyway.
Zurich fired their manager just after the break and had a decent finish to the season, but were never a threat to make the post-season. Milan only finished 2 games back of Lisbon, but that was the closes they have been over the last 2 months.
Brussels lost to London in 13 innings on the last day to confirm their elimination from the post-season.
Vienna and London played a 20 inning game in July that was probably the highlight of both teams' season.
Glasgow won 10 in a row in July and 21 total in the month to move to the top of their division. A position which they held onto fairly comfortably. They won a game against Brussels on August 5th by scoring 10 times in the 7th to win 11-6.
Barcelona had possibly the worst month ever going 6-23 in July. They were also 4-19 in September.
Player Notes -
Teodor Zahradnicek (Moscow) hit a cycle in the first week after the All-Star break.
There was another occurance of 12 different award winners in the second half. Most of the names were familiar. The hitters were -
Romochka Wider (Lisbon),
Fabien 'Sawmill' Lefebvre (Paris),
Nicodemus Theothanou (Brussels),
Samuel Polach (Budapest),
Clodio Picano (Helsinki) and
Flip van den Bosch (Sofia). The pitchers were -
Max Schlotterbeck (Milan),
Alexander Schimpf (London),
Didier Lelievre (Brussels),
Mirko Bukvajova (Stockholm),
Brad Mardment (Budapest) and
Vaino Saraste (Sofia).
Veteran pitchers
Yoan Lelievre (Budapest) and
Stuart Seaward (Dublin) both reached the 200 win plateau.
The best hitting performance of the second half belonged to Oslo's
Kevn Trouve, who was 4/4 with a double and 2 home runs against Berlin. He drove in 7 runs in the Metros 11-6 win on July 11th.
Philippe Gautier (Madrid) also had a 7 RBI day late in the season.
Lukas Happ (Milan) became the 3rd man to reach 2500 hits in his EBL career.
Phoenix Pappas (Athens) threw a two-hitter on September 18th against Berlin, in which he struck out 15 Dragon hitters.
Significant Injuries -
Malcolm Kennedy (Dublin) missed the last 2 months of the season with a herniated disc. The 36 year-old was in the middle of another superb season with a 13-5 record and a 2.97 ERA. He will be ready for the playoffs.
Unfortunately
Yoann Bernard (Barcelona) has had to retire with vision problems. The 29 year-old Frenchman was a career .292 hitter with 121 HR and 517 RBI to go along 280 SB. His career highlight was probably being named to the 1988 Euro Championship All Tournament Team.
