July 2, 1882 - Sunday Base Ball Report

Boston continues to hold its narrow lead over Detroit and Cleveland, but there's a surprising new team in the first division. Going into this season, Providence had been at or near the bottom of the NL standings in every year of the club's existence. They were so bad that their move into sixth place last season marked a significant achievement for the club. All of a sudden, they appear to be changing the culture in Rhode Island. Providence doesn't have any big stars, so they aren't likely to seriously contend for the pennant this year, but for once there is real hope for the future.
