Rays Expos-ed in 3-2 loss
Montreal DH homers for early lead
June 5, 1998

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Montreal Expos made the most of the American League rules at Tropicana Field tonight as Designated Hitter Chris Jones hit a two-run home run in the second inning, giving his club a lead they would not relinquish.

Jones hit a 374-foot homer to left-center field off Jimmy Key, giving Montreal a quick 2-0 lead. Though the Tampa Bay Devil Rays would scrape together a couple runs, the Expos held up their side of the scoreboard for the 3-2 win.

"It's tough to have as many one-run losses as we've had lately," said Devil Rays manager Christian O'Neal. "Sometimes those hurt more than a 10-1 pounding, but the bright side is that we're in these ball games all the way."

Key was the loser, falling to 3-3 on the year, 1-1 with Tampa Bay. The veteran lefty gave up three runs on eight hits and two walks in seven innings. Omar Daal improved to an improbable 9-1 with a 2.76 ERA for the Expos, yielding two runs on six hits and four walks in eight innings. Dave Veres has a 1-2-3 ninth inning to record his 16th save on the year.
