July 23, 1882 - Sunday Base Ball Report

National League

Boston Red Caps 33-16
Detroit Wolverines 28-21
Cleveland Blues 27-22
Providence Grays 26-23
Buffalo Bisons 22-26
Worcester Ruby Legs 21-27
Troy Trojans 20-28
Chicago White Stockings 17-31

Providence got a real eye-opener this week, as Boston swept them in their three-game series. With that dominating victory, Boston looks significantly better than their three rivals for the National League crown.

There have been three significant transactions in the past week or so. First, Buffalo resigned their overpaid catcher Frank Selman (1-30-.234-3) to another big four-year contract extension. This should leave them basically unable to make any big changes and many observers think it means Buffalo will be a second-division team for the foreseeable future.

Meanwhile, Buffalo and Providence made a player trade that could help both teams. Buffalo sent utilityman Jack Rowe to Providence and got back second baseman Jack "Moose" Farrell, who was languishing on the Grays' bench. Since the trade, Rowe has played three different positions for Providence and is hitting a solid .273, while Farrell has been installed as the Bisons' new second baseman, though he's hit only .111 so far.

Also, for the first time we had a trade between leagues. Worcester decided to send its unneeded outfielder Jerry Dorgan to the Philadelphia Athletics in exchange for pitcher Doc Landis. While Landis hasn't yet appeared in a game for Worcester, Dorgan has hit .361 for Philadelphia. If this keeps up, the AA club will be the clear winner in this deal.
