News and Notes:

-Newmarket claimed three players off waivers this week, hoping to improve the teams depth. First they signed IF Jeffrey Franklin from the Dover Green Wave. Franklin hit .216 3-23 a year ago, but hit .245 with 16 homeruns and 68 RBI in 2008 for Dover. He will split time with Alex Alba at 2B. Next they signed MR Kenzo Yoshida from the Danvers Falcons. The 26 year old Yoshida was 3-2 with a 5.44 ERA last year for Danvers. He pitched in 40 games, covering 49 2/3 innings, allowing 50 hits and 16 walks while striking out 30. Lastly, they claimed P Jose Barron from Danvers. The Mules traded Barron to Danvers at the beginning of last year, where he went 4-9 with a 5.33 ERA for the Falcons. He started 17 games, throwing 104 2/3 innings, allowing 136 hits, walking 23 and striking out 113. He will resume the swing role he had for the Mules in 08-09.

-Reigning Cy Young winner Pedro Rangel and the Bangor Crusaders have agreed on a new three year contract that will pay the 34 year old just over $2.15 million a year for the next three seasons. Last year, he went 19-3 with a 3.03 ERA. He pitched 31 times, covering 216 2/3 innings, allowing 195 hits ans just 27 walks while striking out 176. 2009 came out of nowhere for Rangel, who was just 9-13 with a 3.88 ERA in 30 starts in 2008 for the Salem Witches.

-Portland P Dave "Roach" Phillips felt something pop in his elbow in the third inning of his first start this year and an MRI revealed a torn elbow ligament that will sideline the 28 year old for the season. Last year, Phillips was 8-13 with a 3.46 ERA in 30 starts for the Bulldogs, a big improvement over his 2008 campaign that saw him go just 6-9 with a 5.46 ERA in 23 starts.

Next on tap for the Mules is the first road trip of the year as we head to Durham to square off against the Oyster River Bobcats, followed by a trip to Portsmouth to face the Clippers.
