IBA Regional Tourney 1st Round Results!

The pairings for the Regional Tournaments have been set. Each region's tourney will consist of 16 fighters for each weight class.


North American Boxing Council
Heavyweights


1 - Shannon Briggs 14-0-1 (8) vs 16 - Travis Walker 8-3-2 (3) - Non stop, toe to toe action snares Briggs a 6 KO improving to 15-0-1 (9) Great fight!
2 - John Ruiz 13-0-0 (4) vs. 15 - Lamon Brewster 9-3-1 (4) - Ruiz gets up from a KD in 4th to dominate the rest of the way 10 UD Ruiz improves to 14-0-0 (4)
3 - Lance Whitaker 13-0-0 (8) vs 14 - Ray Mercer 10-3-0 (7) - Mercer leads big on all 3 cards when he breaks his hand and quits, 9 TKO! Whitaker improves to 14-0-0 (9)
4 - Riddick Bowe 12-1-0 (10) vs 13 - Obed Sullivan 12-2-0 (4) - A cut over Bowes eye ticks him off and he KD's Sullivan 3 times for a 9 TKO improving to 13-1-0 (11)
5 - Lou Savarese 13-1-1 (4) vs 12 - Larry Donald 11-2-0 (4) - Furious bout snares Savarese a 10 MD to improve to 14-1-1 (4)
6 - Michael Grant 12-0-1 (7) vs 11 - Tony Thompson 9-1-2 (1) - Grant dominates a tough Tony Thompson to earn a 9 TKO on cuts improving to 13-0-1 (8)
7 - Oliver McCall 12-1-1 (6) vs 10 - Monte Barrett 10-3-0 (2) - McCall was robbed, as he scored a KD in the 8th Fight's a Draw! Rematch in 2 weeks!
8 - Hasim Rahman 12-1-0 (2) vs 9 - Demetrice King 12-1-0 (6) - Hasim 10 UD Improves to 13-1-0 (2)

Light Heavyweights

1 - Chad Dawson 15-0-0 (6) vs 16 - Kelvin Davis 9-1-3 (4) - Dawson did enough to win the fight, but the judges were watching cartoons or something and gifted Davis with a Draw Dawson moves to 15-0-1 (6) and Davis to 9-1-4 (4). Rematch in 2 weeks!
2 - Evander Holyfield 13-0-0 (7) vs 15 - Montell Griffin 11-2-1 (2) - Holyfield was just too much for his opponent, Griffin went down for the count in the 6th Holyfield improves to 14-0-0 (8)
3 - Roy Jones Jr. 14-0-0 (8) vs 14 - Dale Brown 12-2-0 (4) - Jones Jr. Impresses with a 10 UD improving to 15-0-0 (8).
4 - Steve Cunningham 13-0-2 (4) vs 13 - Allan Green 11-1-1 (5) - Cunningham moves to 14-0-2 (4) with an impressive boxing display.
5 - Virgil Hill 10-0-4 (4) vs 12 - Louis Del Valle 12-3-0 (6) - Virgil Hill smartly outboxxed Del Valle for a split decision that wasn't even that close to improve to 11-0-4 (4)
6 - Ezra Sellers 13-2-0 (8) vs 11 - Jeff Lacy 13-2-0 (9) - This was a WAR! Sellers survived 2 knockdowns to score 2 of his own..last one being a KO in the 9th! Sellers improves to 14-2-0 (9)
7 - Julio Gonzalez 11-0-2 (3)vs 10 Robert Daniels 11-0-2 (4) - Gonzalez dropped Daniels in the 7th enroute to a tough fought split decision win. Gonzalez improves to 12-0-2 (3)

8 - Michael Moorer 14-1-0 (10) vs 9 - Matt Godfrey 12-1-0 (4) - Moorer dominated Godfrey winning on an 8 TKO to improve to 15-1-0 (11)


Middleweights


1 - James Toney 15-0-0 (10) vs 16 - Raul Marquez 11-2-1 (6) - Toney scores a TKO in the 6th improving to 16-0-0 (11)
2 - Kelly Pavlik 14-0-0 (7) vs 15 James Kirkland 12-1-0 (7) - Pavlik scored a dominating 1st round KO to improve to 15-0-0 (8)
3 - Robert Allen 15-0-1 (10) vs 14 Jose Antonio Rivera 11-2-1 (5) - Allen knocked down Rivera 2 times in the 6th, only to be DQ'd with no warnings for a blatant rabbit punch. Rivera improves to 12-2-1 (5).
4 - Paul Williams 11-1-1 (5) vs 13 Verno Phillips 10-1-2 (3) - Williams put on a slick boxing display for the full 10 rounds to improve to 12-1-1 (5)
5 - Bernard Hopkins 12-1-1 (9) vs 12 Joe Greene 8-3-1 (4) - Hopkins dropped Greene 2 times enroute to a dominating 10 decision. Hopkins improves to 13-1-1 (9)
6 - Fernando Vargas 12-1-1 (5) vs 11 Carlos Bojorquez 12-1-2 (7) - Bojorquez battered a game Vargas to earn a 10 UD and improve to 13-1-2 (7)
7 - Jermain Taylor 11-0-2 (3) vs 10 Carl Daniels 11-1-0 (2) - Daniels battered Taylor to score a 1 TKO...I felt the ref was too fast to stop the fight with only 1 second left in the round! Daniels improves to 12-1-0 (3).
8 - Keith Holmes 13-1-0 (4) vs Antwun Echols 11-1-1 (10) - Echols survives a cut to win a 10 Majority Decision I thought was a draw to improve to 12-1-1 (10)


Welterweights


1 - Vernon Forrest 14-0-1 (5) vs 16 - Andre Berto 11-1-1 (4) - Vernon Forrest dominated a tough Andre Berto to win a 10 UD and improve to 15-0-1 (5)
2 - Francisco Bojado 14-0-0 (4) vs 15 - Oscar Diaz 13-1-0 (1) - Both men fought their hearts out back and forth for a 10 round majority draw. Bojado goes to 14-0-1 (4) and Diaz moves to 13-1-1 (1) Rematch in 2 weeks!
3 - Zab Judah 13-0-0 (5) vs 14 Ramon Campas 10-3-1 (7) - Judah was too clever for Campas enroute to a 8 TKO that left Campas bloodied and battered! Judah improves to 14-0-0 (6)
4 - Vince Phillips 13-0-2 (3) vs 13 DeMarcus Corley 12-3-0 (0) - Vince Phillips survived the storm that was Corley to score a 7 TKO on cuts. Phillips improves to 14-0-2 (4).
5 - Sharmba Mitchell 13-0-1 (4) vs 12 Cory Spinks 10-2-1 (2) - Mitchell proves his case with knockdowns in the 9th and 10th to win an easy 10 UD and improve to 14-0-1 (4)
6 - Alfonso Gomez 11-1-2 (4) vs 11 Lamont Peterson 11-1-2 (2) - Gomez improves to 12-1-2 (4) in this snorefest of a split decision.
7 - David Estrada 10-0-4 (1) vs 10 Jessie Feliciano 10-1-4 (2) - Estrada survives a knockdown in the 10th to win a 10 UD. Even with the KD, no controversy here..Estrada improves to 11-0-4 (1)
8 - Antonio Margarito 12-1-1 (7) vs 9 - Adrian Mora 12-2-1 (3)
- Margarito floored Mora for the first time in his career to score a 3 KO. Both men came to fight! Margarito improves to 13-1-1 (8)


Lightweights


1 - Floyd Mayweather Jr. 12-0-0 (6) vs 16 - Monty Meza-Clay 10-2-1 (3) - Mayweather Jr. punishes a suprising Meza-Clay in a war that was 48-47 (x3) when the cut on Meza-Clay's eye turned into a gusher in the 6th. Mayweather improves to 13-0-0 (7)
2 - Julio Diaz 12-2-0 (6) vs 15 Juan Diaz 10-2-0 (2) - The battle of the Diaz's was just that. a 10 round war that saw both men's left eyes swollen and Julio sported a cut over his left eye. Julio wins a close UD that I felt was a draw! Julio Diaz improves to 13-2-0 (6)
3 - Jose Luis Castillo 12-0-1 (10) vs 14 Steve Forbes 9-4-2 (0) - Castillo uses Forbes for a human heavy bag for 10 rounds dropping him in the 7th. Man Forbes can take a punch though! 10 UD in dominating fashion for Castillo, now 13-0-1 (10)
4 - Shane Mosley 13-0-1 (9) vs 13 Angel Manfredy 9-1-4 (6) - Sugar wasn't so sweet to Manfredy, knocking him down 3 times enroute to a 10 UD Mosely moves to 14-0-1 (9)
5 - Paul Spadafora 13-1-1 (1) vs 12 Carlos Navarro 10-3-0 (7)Navarro's controlled agression and a cut over Spadafora's left eye enabled Navarro to win a close 10 round UD Navarro improves his record to 11-3-0 (7)
6 - Oscar De La Hoya 11-1-0 (7) vs 11 Steve Johnston 11-1-0 (0) Johnston reoopened a nasty cut over Oscar's right eye to win this WAR with a 7 TKO on cuts. Johnston's eyes were both swelling badly at the time of the stoppage, and these 2 were evenly matched throughout! Johnston improves to 12-1-0 (1) getting his first stoppage!
7 - Marco Antonio Barrera 11-2-0 (3) vs 10 Steven Luevano 10-2-0 (5)Barrera was just too strong for Luevano, dropping him once in the 10th enroute to a 10 UD that improves Barrera to 12-2-0 (3)
8 - Jesus Chavez 11-2-0 (6) vs 9 - Nate Campbell 12-1-1 (7)
This fight saw both men down, but Chavez appeared to get the better of it in this action packed bout, but the judges called it a majority draw! Chavez goes to 11-2-1 (6) and Campbell goes to 12-1-2 (7) Rematch in 2 weeks!

Featherweights



1 - Juan Manuel Marquez 15-0-0 (10) vs 16 - Abner Mares 10-2-2 (5)Marquez and Mares both fought their hearts out With Marquez being the stronger of the 2 scoring a knockdown in the 9th and giving Mares a bloody eye enroute to a 10 round UD. Marquez improves to 16-0-0 (10)
2 - Erik Morales 14-0-0 (6) vs 15 - Manuel Medina 10-3-2 (1) Morales does just enough to earn a 10 split decision in a lackluster performance by both fighters. Morales goes to 15-0-0 (6)
3 - Nestor Garza 13-0-0 (5) vs 14 - Freddie Norwood 9-2-1 (3) - Norwood dominates Garza despite having to get up in the 5th from a devastating hook to defeat a bloody Garza with a 6 TKO! NOrwood improves to 10-2-1 (4) while Garza gets his first loss!
4 - Litzau Jason 13-1-0 (6) vs 13 - Danny Romero 11-3-0 (7) - Danny Romero dominated for 10 rounds with knockdowns in the 9th and 2 in the 10th, the final for the count 10 KO! Romero improves to 12-3-0 (8)
5 - Oscar Larios 13-1-0 (10) vs 12 Dan Sutherland 11-2-1 (3) - Larios survives a 1st round knockdown to dominate Sutherland the rest of the way scoring 2 knockdowns in the 5th, then putting him away in the 8th. Larios improves to 14-1-0 (11) with the KO!
6 - Daniel Ponce-DeLeon 12-0-1 (8) vs 11 Rocky Juarez 14-1-0 (5) - Ponce-DeLeon survived a KD in the 4th and fought his way back to a draw in this slugfest! Juarez is now 14-1-1 (5) and Ponce-DeLeon is now 12-0-2 (8). Rematch in 2 weeks.
7 - Alejandro Gonzalez 13-0-1 (9) vs 10 Israel Vazquez 11-2-0 (8) - Vazquez survived a nose bleed for most of the fight scoring KD's in the 5th and 10th enroute to a dominating yet action packed 10 UD to hand Gonzalez his first loss! Vazquez improves to 12-2-0 (8)
8 - Roberto Leyva 11-2-1 (7) vs Clarence Adams 11-1-0 (3) - Leyva uses knockdowns in the 8th and 9th to seal the dominating 10 decision. He improves to 12-2-1 (7)

Bantamweights


1 - Rafael Marquez 14-0-0 (12) vs 16 - Jhonny Gonzalez 10-3-0 (6) - Marquez uses knockdowns in 4 different rounds to destroy Gonzalez in a 10 UD. The question is, why didn't the ref stop the fight? Marquez improves to 15-0-0 (12)
2 - Tim Austin 12-0-1 (4) vs 15 - Cruz Carbajal 11-2-1 (3) - Austin was too fast and strong for Carbajal, scoring 3 knockdowns, the final one sealing a 7 KO and improving Austin's record to 13-0-1 (5)
3 - Diego Morales 12-1-2 (7) vs 14 - Julio Zarate 11-3-1 (0)Morales wore down a suprising Zarate, scoring a knockdown in the 9th enroute to a 9 TKO! Morales improves to 13-1-2 (8)
4 - Oscar Arciniega 11-2-0 (5) vs 13 - Genaro Garcia 9-2-2 (7) - Garcia's agression was a bit too much for Arcinega in a close entertaining 10 UD for Garcia who earns his 10th win to improve to 10-2-2 (7)
5 - Roger Gonzalez 12-1-1 (6) vs 12 - Heriberto Ruiz 8-3-2 (4) - Gonzalez battered his opponent before scoring a 4 TKO to improve to 13-1-1 (7)
6 - Raul Martinez 11-1-0 (4) vs 11 - Cristian Mijares 9-2-3 (1) - Martinez knocked Mijares down in the 9th, Mijares returned the favor in the 10th, Martinez held on to win a highly disputed majority decision and improve to 12-1-0 (4) These 2 will have to meet again as the scoring was pathetic!
7 - Jose Navarro 10-1-2 (3) vs 10 - Martin Castillo 9-3-1 (3) - Castillo dominated this fight, even scoring a knockdown in the 7th, but the cut he suffered in the 1st wouldn't stay closed, and the fight was stopped in the 8th for a shocking TKO for Navarro! Navarro improves to 11-1-2 (4)
8 - Gerson Guerro 10-2-1 (4) vs 9 - Fernando Montiel 11-2-0 (9) - Guerro and Montiel went to war, Montiel opening a cut on Guerro's forehead Guerrero knocking Montiel down 2 times before the ref stopped the fight in the 10th round handing Guerrero a hard earned TKO! Score cards were split through 9..Guerro improves to 11-2-1 (5)

Flyweights


1 - Jose Victor Burgos 13-0-1 (5) vs 16 Isidro Garcia 10-3-2 (0) - Garcia uses brilliant footwork and faster hands to styme Burgos for 10 rounds to earn a split decision. Garcia moves to 11-3-2 (0)
2 - Jorge Arce 12-0-1 (7) vs 15 - Chris Fuller 11-1-2 (1) - The fighters accidentally butt heads in 1st cutting Fuller's right eye. Arce then pours it on trying to get the KO before they stop the fight, finally in the 6th the ref stops the fight with Arce winning the 6 UTD. Saved Fuller a beating!
3 - Hugo Fidel Cazares 12-0-0 (8) vs 14 Samuel Gutierrez 8-3-2 (3) - Cazares spotted Gutierrez the first round then proceded to pummel Gutierrez for the last 9 rounds for an easy 10 UD improving to 13-0-0 (8)
4 - Mark Johnson 12-0-0 (5) vs 13 - Luis Maldonado 13-1-0 (4) - Johnson out slicked, out quicked and out hit Maldonado for 10 rounds scoring 2 knockdowns enroute to a dominating 10 round UD. Johnson improves to 13-0-0 (5)
5 - Ulises Solis 12-1-1 (5) vs 12 - Alejandro Montiel 8-1-4 (3) - The best punch of the night was a butt by Solis that cut Montiel. The cut reopened several times stopping the fight and giving Solis a 9 TKO when Montiel was ahead on 2 cards! A curious call when the cut came from an intentional butt! Solis improves to 13-1-1 (6)
6 - Gerardo Verde 10-0-3 (3) vs 11 Brian Viloria 8-1-3 (3) Verde scored a knockdown in the 1st and poured it on for the next 3 rounds, Viloria tries to storm back, and the 2 stand toe to toe for most of the fight, with Viloria winning a spirited 10 UD to improve to 11-0-3 (3)
7 - Jose Antonio Aguirre 11-1-1 (4) vs 10 Isaac Bustos 9-5-0 (0) - Aguirre was somewhat lethargic for the first 4 rounds but stormed back, cutting Bustos then scoring knockdowns in each of the last 3 rounds, earning a decisive 10 round UD to improve to 12-1-1 (4)
8 - Will Grigsby 12-2-1 (1) vs 9 - Cesar Lopez 10-1-4 (1)
- Interesting boxing match with no fireworks. Each of the 10 rounds hard to score these 2 were so evenly matched...so they get to do it again, 10 draw..Grigsby goes to 12-2-2 (1) and Lopez goes to 10-1-5 (1)

Draw Rematches:


Monte Barrett used slick boxing to avoid Oliver McCall's superior power as these 2 fought their hearts out in this one. Barrett earns a 10 UD 97-93 96-94 97-93 to improve to 11-3-1 (2)

Chad Dawson knocked down Kelvin Davis for the first time in his short career enroute to a 96-93 97-92 96-94 10 UD. Both men stood toe to toe in the 10th trying to score a KO, but survived a furious round! Dawson improves to 16-0-1 (6)

Francisco Bojado finally figured out the puzzle that is Oscar Diaz, scoring 2 knockdowns in the 10th to open up what was a close fight through 9...Bojado wins 96-92 97-91 97-91 to fatten his record to 15-0-1 (4)

Nate Campbell came out throwing bombs, cutting Jesus Chavez in the 3rd then scoring a devastating knockdown in the 3rd. Chavez somehow survived the carnage, came out throwing some bombs of his own in the 4th only to have Campbell widen the cut to the point that the referee stopped the bout 4 TKO for Campbell who improves to 13-1-2 (8)!

Daniel Ponce-DeLeon got up from a knockdown in the 2nd by Rocky Juarez to fight his way back into this despite a cut over his right eye and a nearly closed left eye to score a devastating knockout in the 8th round of this action packed fight. Through 7 all 3 judges had it 66-66! Ponce-DeLeon improves to 13-0-2 (9)

Will Grigsby used better movement in this rematch against Cesar Lopez to earn a 10 UD 98-93 99-92 99-94 to move to the next round of the tourney.. Grigsby improves to 13-2-2 (1)

Thus ends the first round of the North American Boxing Council Title Tournament!
