-Alot of action out of Newmarket the past two months. Having seen during the World Series that their pitching was not up to par when facing the killer offenses of the Southern League, the Mules went out and signed the top two free agent Pitchers that have proven track records against SL competition.
First, they signed the only Pitcher of the Year Award winner the Southern League has ever known, Chris Briggs away from the Gloucester Fishermen to a 4 year contract, that will pay the 33 year old lefty $16 million dollars. Briggs, the NEBL's, all-time wins leader, was 17-8 with a 2.60 ERA last year in Gloucester. He started 29 games, covering 211 1/3 innings, allowing just 167 hits and 40 walks while striking out 190. 2009 was his best year, going 21-7 with a 2.42 ERA in 31 starts.
Chris Briggs career Stats:
-Next, they signed 30 year old lefty Felipe Garcia away from the Nashua Titans to a 5 year, 10 million dollar deal. Garcia was injured most of last year, so Newmarket is hoping he regains his past form. He was 6-2 with a 2.74 ERA in just 11 starts a year ago for the Titans. In 2009 though, he was 18-4 with a league leading 2.03 ERA. He had pitched in 30 games, 208 1/3 innings, giving up 185 hits, walking 36 and striking out 162 batters. He is expected to slot in the #3 spot in the rotation behind Pitcher of the Year winners Jesus Guardado and Briggs.
Felipe Garcia's career Stats:

-Having made both of these signings allowed Newmarket to deal from a position of strength, and they used this to bolster their minor league system.
Dealing with a Nashua team that needed to replace Garcia, the Mules acted quickly, sending P Jesus Flores to the Titans for star IF prospect Augusto "Spud" Lima. Last year was Flores finest season as he went 17-9 with a 3.29 ERA in 31 starts for Newmarket. He pitched 216 1/3 innings, giving up 195 hits, walking 53 and striking out 174. Lima, the 5th highest rated prospect in all of baseball, hit .293 with 11 homeruns and 69 RBI in 98 games at AAA. He also provides blazing speed, having stolen 40 bases in 52 chances a year ago. He will be moved to second base in the Newmarket organization, and will start the 2011 season at AAA Louisville.
Augusta Lima's Career Stats:
-
Marblehead trades OF Jesus Pinto to the Portland Bulldogs for RP Dave Harrison and a minor league infielder. Pinto hit .307 a year ago with eight HR and 53 RBI along with 30 doubles after hitting .262 6-32 in 2009. Harrison struggled a year ago, going 0-4 with a 6.92 ERA and 2 saves in 15 games. 2010 was a far cry from 2009 for Harrison when he went 4-1 witha 1.74 ERA and one save in 31 games for Portland.

Portland continued to reshape their team, sending RP Will Klein to the Manchester Lancers for SS Ray Irvin. Klein was 3-5 with a 4.96 ERA between Portland and Gloucester a year ago. He appeared in 32 games, pitching 45 1/3 innings, allowing 30 hits and 30 walks with 49 strikeouts. Irvin spent the year with both Portsmouth and Manchester, where he hit a combined .270 with one homerun and 21 RBI along with eight doubles and four triples in 185 AB.

Reliever Peter Ellis and the Nashua Titans have agreed on a one year contract worth $1.396 million dollars. The 30 year old was 2-2 with a 2.14 ERA and one save with the Peabody Tanners a year ago. He pitched in 27 games, covering 33 2/3 innings, giving up 31 hits and 11 walks while striking out 23. He was Peabody's closer in the inaugural NEBL season of 2008 where he saved 15 games and posted a 2.91 ERA in 36 games.
-The Portland Bulldogs solidifed the back end of their bullpen this week, signing closer Jerry "Crayon" Ward away from the Portsmouth Clippers to a 4 year contract worth just over $2 million per year. Last year, the 32 year old Ward was 2-3 with a 1.89 ERA and 21 saves in 33 games for the Clippers. He pitched 33 1/3 innings, allowing 26 hits and just six walks, striking out 36.
