December/January News and Notes:
-Fraser Tucker and the Salem Witches have agreed on a two year contract worth $1,438,000. Last season for Danvers, Tucker hit .217, but pounded 19 homeruns and drove in 64 in 117 games. For his career, the 28 year old from Hanson, MA is a .224 hitter with 57 homeruns and 191 RBI in 350 games, all with the Falcons.
-The Beverly Panthers made their first significant Free Agent signing this week, bringing on Harry Behan on a three year contract worth $1,607,000 per year. The 32 year old Behan was 3-3 with a 2.48 ERA and 5 saves a year ago for Oyster River. He appeared in 47 games, pitching 58 innings, allowing 53 hits, while walking 23 walks and striking out 67. Two years ago as the Bobcats closer, he saved 20 games in 43 games.
-The Manchester Lancers have signed 36 year old 1B Domingo Garcia to a one year contract worth just $310,000. Last year for Portsmouth, Garcia hit .236 with 16 HR and 63 RBI along with 26 doubles in 120 games. Garcia has proven to be a very durable player, missing just one game in the three year history of the NEBL. His best year came in 2008, when he hit .314 with 26 homeruns and 90 RBI for the Clippers.
-The Salem Witches have come to terms with reliever Javier Valenzuela on a three year contract worth just over 1.4 million dollars. Valenzuela was 3-7 with a 3.33 ERA and 2 saves in 36 games for Portsmouth a year ago. The 32 year old reliever had his best year in 2009, when he was 1-2 with a tiny 1.38 ERA and one save for the Clippers, his first year in Portsmouth. Last year, he pitched in 46 innings, allowing 37 hits and 11 walks, while striking out 53.
-The Bangor Crusaders have traded 25 year old C Domingo Ayala to the Lowell River Hawks for 26 year old SS Carlos Vazquez. Vazquez hit .249 with 11 homeruns and 52 RBI for the Nashua Titans last year, in 113 games, before being claimed during the expansion draft by the River Hawks.
-Jacob Davis has signed a two year contract worth just over $4 million dollars with the Beverly Panthers. Last year, Davis hit .302 with seven homeruns and 51 RBI for the Marblehead Magicians. He appeared in 111 games, added 31 doubles and posting a 28/23 BB/K ratio. He is a career .275 hitter, and has struck out just 66 times in 1,079 at-bats.
-Edwin Boone has signed a two year contract with the Dover Green Wave worth $567,000 per year. Last year, Boone was 2-3 with a 4.25 ERA and 1 save between Salem and Newmarket. He appeared in 27 games, pitching 36 innings, allowing 39 hits and seven walks, while striking out 38, but surrendering five homeruns
-The Manchester Lancers have sent 27 year old OF Robin Forman to the Oyster River Bobcats for 1B Patrick Gilbert. Forman was a .224 hitter with four homeruns and 28 RBI last year, his rookie season for the Lancers, while Gilbert hit just .236, but pounded out 27 homeruns and drove in 76 for the Bobcats. He appeared in 120 games and struck out 103 times.
-The Newmarket Mules have taken a chance on a young Canadien pitcher, who scouts say show tremendous promise as they signed Dominic "Digger" Proulx to a three year contract worth $1,000,000 per year. He will start the season at AAA Louisville, but any injuries or better than expected progress could see him with the big club this year.
