April 7,8,9 v Dover Green Wave (0-0)
April 7-A three run bottom of the first inning that saw RBI's from Brad Ford and Mario Saenz, and saw a third run score via a balk, giving Newmarket a 3-1 lead, a lead that Jesus Guardado would make hold up as the Mules won on Opening Day in Newmarket, beating Dover 3-2. Guardado went the first seven innings, allowing five hits and two runs, walking two and striking out five, earning the win. (1-0)

April 8-Alberto Flores hit a go ahead two run HR in the sixth inning, helping Newmarket beat Dover, 3-2. Chris Briggs, making his Newmarket debut was just as advertised, going eight innings, allowing eight hits and two runs, walking none and striking out six, picking up the win. John Coury pitched a scoreless ninth for his 2nd save in as many days. John Jones went 3-4 with and RBI in the loss for the Green Wave. (2-0)

April 9-Mario Saenz went 2-4 with two RBI and Juan Escobedo hit a solo HR as Newmarket completed the sweep of Dover, beating the Green Wave, 5-1. Newcomer Felipe Garcia went seven innings, allowing eight hits and one run, with two walks and five strikeouts, earning the win in his Newmarket debut. Rookie Pablo Alvarez picked up his first big league hit, a single in the 6th inning. (3-0)

April 10,11,12 at Portsmouth Clippers (2-1)
April 10-Norbert Heard, making his big league debut at C, went 2-4 with a double, triple and RBI as he played a part in both Mules runs as Newmarket snuck past Portsmouth, 2-1. Heard drove in the first Mules run with a double in the 4th and lead off the top of the 9th inning with a triple, scoring on a pinch hit double off the bat of Sergio Hernandez, making a winner of Jose Barron, who pitched two scoreless innings in relief of Juan Jose Fernandez. (4-0)

April 11-Trailing 1-0 entering the top of the 9th inning, Alberto Flores hit a one out, two run homerun off Jesus Contreras, as Newmarket came from behind again, beating the Clippers 2-1 for a second straight day. Alex Herman picked up the no decision, despite pitching seven innings of one run, six hit ball, walking two and striking out seven. Sherwood Hoofe pitched seven shutout innings, walking none and striking out seven for Portsmouth. (5-0)

April 12-Portsmouth ended the Mules five game winning streak to open the season behind Rob Gibson, who went 2-5 with two RBI and Mitsunari Watanabe, who had three hits and two runs scored as the Clippers blanked the Mules, 8-0. Matt Thomas pitched the first six innings, allowing no runs and four hits, walking one and striking out five, earning the win. Jesus Guardado struggled today, going six innings, giving up 10 hits and seven runs, but just three were earned, falling to 1-1. (5-1)

News and Notes:
-Newmarket is 5-1 despite scoring just 15 runs in the six games, and allowing 15 runs as well. As a team, they have a 1.87 team ERA and a .237 team BA. The 15 runs they have scored is already 11 less than the next closest team, the Bangor Crusaders and Dover Green Wave, both with 26.
-Catcher Tony Miranda and the Exeter Blue Hawks have agreed on a new three year contract worth $7.1 million dollars. The 34 year old Miranda hit .275 with 24 homeruns and 85 RBI a year ago and for his career, has hit 80 homeruns and driven in 249 in 338 games.
-Jim Dunbar and the Oyster River Bobcats have come to terms on a two year extention that will pay the 30 year old OF just over 1.3 million dollars per year. Last year, Dunbar hit .256 with 33 homeruns and 84 runs knocked in. All his numbers were up from 2009, when he hit .246 with 17 homers and 54 RBI.
Next up for Newmarket are three games at home, playing host to the Oyster River Bobcats, followed by a trip north to face the Bangor Crusaders.
