Relievers jump from staters and back to relievers all the time. Look at John Smoltz.

That is actually one of the subjects I wanted to talk about as well.

It would be nice if there were a way to make the transition from MR to SP a bit more....smoother....

Although the "Spot Starter" role is a good role to have for one pitcher. I DO have an MR that I have started for 7 games when I lost two of my starters. He was quite effective. That same person is also a very effective reliever as well. He has 78 IP, and the league average for starters this late in my season is about 110. He has a 3.38 ERA, is has a record of 5 - 0, with 7 GS, dunno how many G played, with 8 SVs, 2 BS, and like 12 SO. Has about 15 GF.

So OOTP DOES model pitching roles pretty well, I guess you just have to ferret out a pitcher like this yourself, and just use him however you want to use him in-game. (That is, if you play out every single one of your games this is very much possible.)
Oh I don't mind MRs and SPs going back and fourth I just wish if a guy is listed as a MR he stays that. See my biggest problem I come across in the game is that since I don't play out my games, I just sim, and once the game gets to about 2040 almost all the time I'll have a rotation full of guys with low endurance. Those guys endurance should put them as relievers not starters.
