Yankees downed in Game 7
October 24, 1998
HOUSTON - The Astros have won their first ever World Series.
The Astros defeated the New York Yankees, 4-2, in the deciding Game 7 of the World Series with the Bronx Bombers bringing the potential go-ahead run to the plate in last of the ninth inning with two out.
Jack Voigt, substituting for star slugger Jeff Bagwell, who suffered a leg injury in Game 1, hit what proved to be the game-winning home run, a solo shot off Andy Pettitte in the sixth inning. Voigt hit .263 with three home runs and seven RBI in six World Series games after hitting just .214 with three homers and 15 RBI in 72 games with Houston and the Cincinnati Reds during the regular season. He was named World Series MVP.
