Frye to stay in Tampa Bay
Devil Rays re-sign scrappy infielder
November 13, 1998

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Tampa Bay Devil Rays and secondbaseman Jeff Frye have come to terms on a contract extension for at least next season, possibly through 2000.

Frye, 32, will earn $3.75 million in 1999 and there is a mutual option for $5 million in 2000, with what sources say is a "small" incentive clause based on the number of plate appearances Frye accumulates.

The diminutive Frye - just 5'8" and 165 pounds - was a key member to the Devil Rays lineup this year, hitting .323 with 43 doubles, five home runs, 61 RBI, 74 runs scored and 13 stolen bases in 148 games.

Known as a positive presence in the clubhouse, management felt Frye was worth a few million going forward.

In other business today, the Devil Rays avoided arbitration with pitcher Livan Hernandez by signing the 23-year-old to a two-year contract worth roughly $1.5 million with a team option for a third season at $1 million. The contract is said to have incentives for Hernandez as well. The team also avoided arbitration with reliever Gabe White, who made only 14 appearances in Tampa Bay after spending much of the year in AAA.
