May 3,4,5 v Portsmouth Clippers (12-12)

May 3-Alberto Flores and Mario Saenz each drove in runs in a two run 4th inning and it was all the offense Jesus Guardado would need as Newmarket nipped Portsmouth, 2-1. Guardado pitched seven innings, scattering nine hits and allowing just one run, walking one and striking out two in the win. Juan Escobedo went 3-4 with a run scored out of the leadoff spot for the Mules. (19-6)

May 4-Quint Kobes hit a three run HR, Alberto Flores added a two run blast, and Fernando Peralta added two hits, two RBI and two runs scored as Newmarket beat up on Portsmouth, 7-2. Chris Briggs improved to 4-1 on the year, pitching seven innings, giving up six hits and two runs, walking one and striking out eight. (20-6)

May 5-Scott Fullerton and Mario Saenz drove in runs in the first inning, and while those were the only runs Newmarket would score all day, Felipe Garcia and two relievers would make it stand up as Newmarket completed the sweep of Portsmouth, beating the Clippers, 2-1. Garcia moved to 5-0 on the year, pitching seven strong frames, allowing just five hits and one run, walking nobody and striking out seven, while Dominic Proulx and John Coury each pitched perfect innings, with Coury earning the save. (21-6)

May 6,7,8 at Oyster River Bobcats (12-15)

May 6-Rafael Gutierrez and Alberto Flores each drove in a pair of runs and Juan Escobedo added a solo homerun as Newmarket extended their winning streak, beating Oyster River 6-2. Juan Jose Fernandez improved to 4-0, despite walking five, and givin up four hits in six innings, while striking out five and throwing 107 pitches. (22-6)

May 7-Lex Geels walked Fernando Peralta in the 4th inning, and that was the only baserunner he would allow, as he threw the 4th no-hitter in NEBL history as the Bobcats shutout the Mules, 2-0. Geels was in total control, throwing 108 pitches, striking out 11, including Brad Ford, Jeffrey Franklin and Juan Escobedo in a row in the ninth to end the game. Alex Klein hit a two run homerun for Osyter River to provide all the offense. (22-7)

May 8-Mario Saenz went 3-4 including his first homerun of the year as Newmarket took two of three from Oyster River, beating the Bobcats, 7-2. Saenz, who hit 19 homeruns in 83 games a year ago for the Mules, hit his first shot in his 28th game this year. Juan Escobedo added three hits and a run scored in support of Jesus Guardado, who went seven innings again, allowing six hits and just two unearned runs, lowering his ERA to a league leading 1.62 on the year. (23-7)

-Manchester and Salem played a 22 inning, six hour 30 minute baseball game, with Manchester coming out on top, 6-5. Tomas Ramos and Pedro Gonzalez each went 5-10 for Manchester in the win.




-SS Jason Tate of the Portland Bulldogs will miss the rest of this year and the beginning of next season as he blew out his achilles tendon running the bases earlier this week. Tate was hitting .224 with six homeruns and 16 RBI in 30 games for the Bulldogs. Last year, Tate hit 30 homeruns and drove in 63 in 106 games, and has 86 homeruns in 370 career games, all with Portland.

Next up for Newmarket are three games at home against the Bangor Crusaders, followed by three on the road in Orono against the Red Riot.
