Are you using version 9? Because previous versions would not import 19th century leagues though you could do it with a workaround.
Not sure how you are getting 12 teams since it should start with 4 in the AL & 4 in the NL. The teams in the database had to be edited from real life because of odd # of teams. Garlon did a great job in editing the database in order to get the game to import 19th century leagues.

Do you know how to find the lahman database the game uses?
If not we cant help you. But if you know how to get there then check
the "teams" file and see what teams it has listed for 1875.
If you are using the create historical league option it should have
the setup i mentioned.
