Boston 8, Kanas City 5
With the wind blowing out of Fenway, the pitchers were fortunate to escape without whiplash. Josh Beckett and Luke Hudson combined to surrender 24 hits between the two as Boston rallied late to defeat the Royals 8-5.
After jumping out to a three run lead thanks to a David Ortiz home run, the Sox saw Beckett give it right up. Jose Guillen drove home David DeJesus with a double off the wall in the top of the 2nd and Russ Gload added a two-run single in the 3rd before DeJesus put the Royals ahead with a double to score Gload.
Trailing 5-3, Boston loaded the bases against Hudson in the bottom of the 5th with a pair of walks to J.D. Drew and Mike Lowell and an infield single by Kevin Youkilis. After a Jason Varitek struck out, Julio Lugo singled home two to tie it at 5-5 and, after Coco Crisp greeted Ramon Ramirez with a walk, Dustin Pedroia doubled to deep center to clear the bases and put Boston ahead for good.
W: Beckett (4-2) L: Hudson (3-3) DV: Papelbon (15)
Player of the Game: David DeJesus (4-4, 3 2Bs, R, 2 RBI)
