While the National League playoffs were ho-hum, the American League playoffs were spectacular and surprising at the same time.
First, the repeat AL champion and defending World Series Champion Cleveland Indians, who breezed through the regular season with 111 wins, were swept by the 90-win Seattle Mariners. Cleveland almost extended the series in Game 4. The Mariners led 8-3 after three innings and 9-4 after six innings. But the Indians got a run in the seventh, two in the eighth, and four in the ninth to take an 11-9 lead. But Seattle scored three in the ninth to win the series. Seattle outscored Cleveland 30 to 21 in the shocking four game sweep.
The Hartford Whalers also trailed their series 3-0. Unlike Cleveland, the Whalers' fortunes turned out to be much better. The Whalers had also lost their last six regular season games, so they were ice cold. Hartford dominated Games 4 and 5 in Kansas City, 4-0 and 8-2. But back in Hartford, they had their backs against the wall, trailing the Royals 4-2 heading into the bottom of the eighth. The Whale exploded for four runs, then were able to hold KC to a run in the ninth to eke out a 6-5 victory and tie the series. In Game 7, the Whale led 3-1 in the top of the ninth, but allowed the Royals to tie it up. In the bottom of the ninth, Hartford led off with a leadoff single and a stolen base. After a flyout, there was an intentional walk. The Whalers then stole 3rd base. Another intentional walk loaded the bases with one out. On a 1-2 count, the Royals catcher allowed a passed ball, and the Whalers completed a miraculous four-game comeback!
In the NL, the Pirates and Astros won their series fairly easily.
So the League Championship Series is:
Seattle Mariners vs. Hartford Whalers
Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Houston Astros
