Bad blood brews with Boston
Jones, Suppan face suspension after brawl
April 10, 1999

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. Bad feelings from last night's ballgame boiled over into tonight's contest between the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and Boston Red Sox.

Devil Rays outfielder Andruw Jones and Red Sox pitcher Jeff Suppan are expected to be suspended by the league after sparking a bench-clearing brawl at Tropicana Field tonight. Suppann entered the fourth inning with a 2-0 lead before giving up a solo home run to Erubiel Durazo and, after a Paul Konerko single, a two-run shot to Raul Mondesi. After surrendering the lead with three straight basehits, including the two home runs, Suppan drilled Jones with an inside fastball, hitting the outfielder off the hip. Jones immediately charged the mound and both benches and bullpens emptied.

Jones and Suppan were the only two players ejected from the ballgame and both are expected to face further discipline, including suspension. Jones was replaced by Benny Agbayani while John Wasdin took the mound for the Red Sox.
