Suspended Darensbourg dealt away
Devil Rays acquire minor league lefty from Twins
June 27, 1999
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — One day after the league announced a nine-game suspension of left-handed reliever Vic Darensbourg, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays cut all ties with the struggling southpaw.
Darensbourg, 28, was quietly placed on waivers two days ago after being ejected from a game agains the Toronto Blue Jays in which Darensbourg and Midre Cummings began a bench-clearing brawl. When the suspension was announced, Darensbourg was designated for assignment. This morning, a trade with the Minnesota Twins was announced.
"We wish Mr. Darensbourg the best in his future endeavors," said the Devil Rays General Manager. "Perhaps a change in scenery will better suit the young man."
Darensbourg is 1-2 with a 11.37 ERA in 14 games this year, though he was fantastic in 14 relief outings with Tampa Bay's AAA affiliate.
In return, the Devil Rays acquire Benj Sampson, a 26-year-old southpaw with no big league experience. He is expected to take Darensbourg's spot in the bullpen.
