Devil Rays ace wins 15th game
August 22, 1999
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Pedro Martinez had one of the most impressive performances of any pitcher this season tonight, striking out 15 batters and allowing only four to reach base.
The Tampa Bay Devil Rays shutout the visiting Kansas City Royals, 2-0, at Tropicana Field. Martinez went the distance, throwing a three-hit complete game to improve to 15-2 on the season.
"It was a great job tonight, and he's a huge reason we're still fighting to try and make the playoffs," Devil Rays manager Christian O'Neal said of Martinez. "He's got electric stuff. Just some filthy stuff."
Tampa Bay is 2 games behind the Seattle Mariners in the Wild Card race.
