September 28, 1999
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 7-5 tonight, putting themselves ahead in the Wild Card race with less than a week to go.
The Blue Jays hit Devil Rays pitcher Chad Ogea for six runs in 4 1/3 innings of work, highlighted by a three-run home run off the bat of Jeff Kent in the third inning.
With the loss, Tampa Bay has fallen to second in the Wild Card race, just a half-game behind Toronto. The Seattle Mariners are two games back while the Anaheim Angels are clinging to life, three games behind.
The Devil Rays will send Pedro Martinez (18-3, 3.02 ERA) to the mound tomorrow for the finale of this two-game series against Toronto in hopes of reclaiming the Wild Card lead. The Blue Jays will counter by putting Javier Vazquez (10-3, 3.56 ERA) on the slab.
