Tampa Bay wins Wild Card
Rays go to second season in second season
October 2, 1999
CLEVELAND — The Toronto Blue Jays lost 9-3 to the Indians today, eliminating them from playoff contention and giving the Tampa Bay Devil Rays the American League Wild Card title.
The Devil Rays, scheduled to play at 7 p.m., have won the Wild Card without yet stepping onto the turf at Tropicana Field thanks to Cleveland's win this afternoon.
Bruce Chen, Tampa Bay's scheduled starter, will take the mound against Andy Pettitte and the New York Yankees, however, reports out of St. Petersburg, Florida, indicate Devil Rays manager Christian O'Neal will alter his originally planned starting lineup with a playoff berth now guaranteed.
