Pastime Baseball League - And So It Begins

The Pastime Baseball League's inaugual draft was held yesterday, with the first selection going to the San Antonio Sheriffs. Led by the belief that pitching wins championships, the Sheriffs elected not only to take a strong pitcher, but one who - at only 19 years old - could top their staff for many years to come.

Noodles Hahn became the first player chosen in PBL history. Small in stature at 5'8" and 160 pounds, the young southpaw was a surprise to some as the first pick in the draft, though most agree his talent is extraordinary.

With the second pick, the Memphis Strummers went for arguably to most complete player in the draft, snagging centerfielder Oscar Charleston. A legitimate five-tool player, Charleston himself in only 21 years old, yet is seen as potentially be ready be a dominant force in the PBL already.

A surprise at number three saw leftfielder George Hall snatched up by the Sacramento Stingers. Hall's power potential is highly regarded, but many other players are seen as having a more complete package than what Hall offers.

At #4, the Wichita Brigade chose Rube Waddell, a choice nobody questioned. The fireballing Waddell is a certain staff anchor right off the bat.

#5 is a pick that shocked virtually everyone, as Joe Corbett was chosen by the Alabama Airmen. Corbett certainly has talent, but the pitching depth in this draft was very strong, and it's much in question if Corbett will keep pace with the studs around him.

Rounding out the first round:
Louisville Racers - 1B Dan Brouthers
Las Vegas Bosses - P Tommy Bond
Orlando Orcas - P Francisco Liriano
Los Angeles Idols - CF Mike Donlin
New Orleans Knights - 2B Ross Barnes
Philadelphia Ringers - CF John O'Rourke
Indianapolis Engines - CF Billy Hamilton
Chicago Hitmen - RF King Kelly
New York Heroes - P Harry Howell
Charlotte Cougars - P Kid Nichols
Arizona Sandmen - P Ben Sanders
