November 14, 1999
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Tampa Bay Devil Rays will bring back infielder Jose Hernandez for at least one more season, possibly two, under terms of a contract agreed to today.
Hernandez will take a paycut to stay with the team, though he could earn a slight increase based upon incentives. The 30-year-old thirdbaseman and shortstop wil earn $350,000 in 2000, with the possibility of up to $100,000 more based on the number of plate appearances he has. The team holds an option for the same amount of money and incentive stipulation in 2001. He earned $440,000 this season.
Hernandez hit .240 with 14 home runs and 58 RBI in 143 games this season. In 1998, he hit .278 with 22 homers and 66 RBI in 123 games. Hernandez is a career .244 hitter with 79 home runs and 278 RBI in 748 games with the Texas Rangers, Cleveland Indians, Chicago Cubs, Anaheim Angels and Devil Rays.
