Fight recap
“Kid” McCoy came into the fight with 18 straight wins, 17 via knockout. As the first round got underway, it was obvious that McCoy fans were out in force; they cheered at every punch he threw. McCoy did win the first round, but rounds two through five were fairly even; but most ringside experts gave the edge to McCoy.
Round six was all Bonner. He rocked McCoy early in the round and again as the bell sounded. McCoy was still wobbly in round seven and his left eye was badly swollen. However, this was an even round.
McCoy had his legs back by round eight and began to pepper Bonner with quick one-two combinations. Bonner was almost ready to go by the end of the round but managed to hang on.
McCoy came out like gangbusters in the 9th; intent on ending the fight. He did just that as he pummeled Bonner with a furious body attack, followed by some heavy head shots. The referee had seen enough and stopped the fight.
McCoy was crowned the first ever World Middleweight Champion.
