Volquez Holds Sox's to Two Hits as Reds Save off Sweep
Cincinnati 5, Boston 1
After displaying their offensive muscle in the first two games of the series, the Red Sox were shut down by Cincinnati budding ace Edison Volquez in the series finale. Volquez held Boston to two hits over seven innings, allowing one run while striking out 5 and walking two.
Boston fell behind early when Drew Anderson, who went 3-8 in the series, hit a two-out triple off of Clay Buchholz in the first before scoring on a Ken Griffey Jr. double. Boston tied the game in the fourth, when David Ortiz broke up Volquez's no-hitter with a solo homerun.
The score remained tied until the sixth, when Buchholz ran out of gas. Adam Dunn's two-run home run broke the tie and Griffey followed with a solo shot to put the game out of reach. Brian Corey replaced Buchholz and retired three Reds to end the inning, but the damage was done.
Corey, Manny Delcarmen and Cincinnati's Joe Burton combined to throw five innings of relief without allowing a base runner.
