1998 Final Standings
September 26th 1998 - The Athens Avalanche put together the best regular season ever in 1998. They still face a stiff challenge in the EL playoffs though because reigning champs Sofia put together the second best season ever.

Notes -
Athens won 11 in a row early in the second half to move to the top of the Black Sea division. They had a 24-5 record in July and didn't really slow down. They led the EBL in runs scored (932) and runs allowed (609) with Sofia finishing second in both of those categories (885-631).
Budapest qualified for the playoffs despite trailing Athens by 29 games in their division.
Vienna won in Lisbon on the last day to secure the final WL playoff spot. Madrid had won 2 in a row in Barcelona to move into a tie, but they lost 7-0 on the last day.
Warsaw and Milan both fired their managers late in the season.
Prague scored 8 runs in the bottom of the 9th on July 13th against Hamburg, but unfortunately for them they went into the inning trailing 9-0.
On September 4th, 7 out of the 12 games went to extra innings.
Player Notes -
Stefan Kowelski (Glasgow) won the WL triple crown with a .336 average, 40 homers and 122 RBIs. He was also WL Hitter of the Month for August.
Guignard Aldobrandini (Athens) won the pitching triple crown in the EL, by finishing 24-5 with a 2.97 ERA and 251 strikeouts.
Obelix Barraboutis (Athens) had
11 RBIs in his teams 20-2 win over Moscow on July 23rd. His at-bat sequence went - 2-RBI double (1st), Grand Slam HR (2nd), Ground out (4th), 2-RBI single (5th), 2-RBI HR (7th), walk (8th), RBI walk (9th). He also hit 3 homers in the same game that
Phoenix Pappas threw a no-hitter, leading to a 12-0 win over Oslo on August 25th.
Fabien 'Sawmill' Lefebvre (Paris) hit his 400th career homer on September 14th. He is the 3rd man past this mark.
Nicodemus Theothanou (Barcelona) and
Samuel Polach (Budapest) both went past 300 Home Runs during the season.
Russell Gilmartin (Paris) hit two cycles in the second half of the season. One against Barcelona in July and the other against Zurich at the start of September.
Borisav Anastasijevic (Dublin) also had a cycle on July 20th against Glasgow.
The other WL Hitters of the Month were
Merlin DeGiusti (Milan) and
Bertrand Radcliffe (Brussels).
Radcliffe had a 3 homer game on July 31st to secure his award. The EL winners were
Gustaf Bashe (Helsinki),
Ali Isosomppi (Budapest) and
Suljo Banovic (Sofia).
Isosomppi had a 5/5 day with 2 homers and 6 RBI against Helsinki on July 30th to sway the voters.
The Pitcher of the months awards went to
Arnold Schiff (London),
Adrik Selifanov (Amsterdam),
Gwidon Dobrsynski (Dublin),
Hubert Sittler (Pargue),
Vuk Sesely (Athens) and
Rene Thierry (Budapest).
Tim Pels (Brussels) went 3 for 4 with 2 homers and 8 RBI as his team beat Amsterdam 11-10 on August 6th.
Javier Rodriguez (Amsterdam) had a 28 game hit streak that finished in early September.
Significant Injuries -
Fiers Akerblom (Warsaw) fractured his skull when being hit by a pitch on July 3rd. He should be fit for the start of the 1999 season. He hit .304 with 13 homers in the first 3 months of the season.
Bengt Paulsen (London) injured his back for the second consecutive season and missed most of the second half. He was 10-5 with a 3.67 ERA on July 17th when he went down.
Nicodemus Theothanou (Barcelona) missed all of August with a thigh injury, but he has been back in the line-up for the last few weeks of the season and is looking dtrong for the playoffs.
Jalmari Makkonen (Amsterdam) will miss the playoffs with a bicep problem. The 40-year old was 12-8 with a 3.45 ERA before his injury.
Antonn Bila (Budapest) is also out for the playoffs after suffering an elbow injury. He finished the season at 15-7 with a 3.43 ERA.
