Toronto fires manager after 5-0 loss to BoSox
May 26, 2001
BOSTON — Just hours after losing this afternoon's contest against the Red Sox, the Toronto Blue Jays fired manager Bruce Bochy.
The Bochy-led Blue Jays went 12-36, baseball's worst record.
"We were not doing the things you've got to do every day," said Toronto General Manager Gord Ash. "We saw that things were not going to change unless we made a change."
Bochy's time at the helm of the Blue Jays ends with a 267-267 record from 1998 through today's firing. He previously managed the San Diego Padres for three seasons, leading the friars to a 231-247 record.
Ash said bench coach Gene Tenace and pitching coach Jim Cranney will work together until a manager is hired on either an interim basis or permanently. Tenace served as interim manager of the Blue Jays for 33 games in 1991, leading the club to a 19-14 record over that time.
