Fight recap
As the fight got underway, O’Brien appeared to be in much better shape than Root. After the first three rounds, which O’Brien won, the story of the fight began to emerge; O’Brien was the more accurate puncher and had a very solid defense. By the end of the 8th round, it was apparent that Root was outclassed and would need a knockout to win. However, since he couldn’t penetrate O’Brien’s defense, the likelihood of such an ending was remote. Root would end the fight only landing 17% of his punches.
Although he threw more punches than O’Brien, Root’s strategy, if it can be called that, was to throw a flurry of punches and then clinch. O’Brien appeared very frustrated during the middle to late rounds.
O’Brien took the 15th round off, obviously tired and flustered. Root won the round but it was way too little and much too late to matter. O’Brien easily won a unanimous decision and successfully defended his title for the first time.
