I did some searching and found some stuff that went all around what I want to know but nothing exactly on point.
If I "release" him, a message comes up that says this will add a zillion dollars to my player expenses. I barely have any player expenses that I can spare. What is that all about???
If I "waive" him, a message comes up that askes if I want to place him on "irrevocable waivers" which sounds like what I want...maybe?
How do I get rid of a player I simply do not want. There will be more players that I want to get rid of too.

Player salaries are guaranteed. If you release him and there's 50 million left on his contract, you will have to pay him. A player like that is likely to clear through waivers. You can send him down or release him. Either way, you're going to have to pay the man if no one will trade for him.
