Pena was one of the three interviewed for the job (with Girardi and Mattingly). He was considered the odd man out as no one expected him to get the job over the other two.
However, sources said that the Yankees were extremely impressed with his interview. It was one of the reasons the Yankees and Girardi asked him if he stay as bench coach. And Pena, being the great guy he is, said yes.
When it comes to Mattingly, I think it depends on where he feels wanted. I bet if Torre can convince Dodger management to have Mattingly be his successor, Donny will stay in LA. If that happens, I'd be surprised if the Yankees don't give Pena another serious look.
