July 29, 1883 - Sunday American Association Base Ball Report
St. Louis Browns 40-18
Baltimore Orioles 37-20
Columbus Buckeyes 35-23
Pittsburgh Alleghenys 29-28
Cincinnati Red Stockings 28-29
Louisville Eclipse 26-30
Philadelphia Athletics 19-38
New York Metropolitans 14-42
A few things to note this week. Baltimore's winning streak finally ended at 12, though they remain the new challenger to St. Louis. Also, Cincinnati's Lip Pike had a three-hit game on Saturday, making him the seventh player ever to reach the 1,000-hit plateau. For the 38-year-old Pike, currently playing a part-time role for Cincinnati, it is probably about the end of the line, but it shows his longevity and consistency.
In transaction news, the Philadelphia Athletics swapped players with Providence of the NL and brought in infielder Jack Rowe to play shortstop. The 26-year-old Rowe was hitting only .215 with Providence, but in his first two games with Philadelphia he went 5 for 10 with a double and a triple. Providence got part-time pitcher Charlie Reynolds in the deal, and cleared a starting spot for Emil Gross, who had been struggling in his first year as a bench player.
This week, St. Louis will play at Louisville and Cincinnati, while Baltimore goes to New York and Philadelphia.
