1955 - MLB Year In Review

The American League pennant race quickly became a two-team race as summer rolled around as the Chicago White Sox, the defending AL champs, fought with the Cleveland Indians with neither team no farther back than two games all season long. Chicago held a two-game lead on Labor Day but Cleveland caught up and held a slim one-game lead with a week and a half to go. Towards the junior circuit's last 5 games, the White Sox started falling back and the Indians clinched their first title since 1929 with only two games remaining in the season. Cleveland was led at the plate by Mickey Mantle (.315-37-103) and Ed Bailey (.287-38-103) and on the mound by Frank Lary, who was awarded the AL's Outstanding Pitcher award after winning 17 games and finishing second with a 3.01 ERA. The White Sox ended in 2nd place, 3 games behind, thanks to the hitting of Wally Moon (.301-18-110) and Stan Musial (.293-35-112) with the pitching of Warren Spahn (14 wins, 2.61 ERA). The Baltimore Orioles and the Detroit Tigers both finished 14 games behind and tied for 3rd place. Gail Harris (.298-44-126) was the hitting star for the Orioles and Willie Mays (.301-44-125) was the hitting star for the Tigers.

In the NL, they did the junior circuit one better as it was a three-team race between the Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Braves and Pittsburgh Pirates. The Cubs held the lead in the early going before the Pirates tied them by Labor Day with the Braves only 1.5 games back. The Cubs began faultering and with 10 games to go, Milwaukee was now on top with Pittsburgh 2.5 games back and Chicago 5 games out. Chicago continued its collapse and the Braves were able to clinch the NL title with 4 games remaining. Milwaukee was led at the plate by Hank Aaron (.319-25-106), the NL's MVP, and Hank Bauer (.278-20-73) while Don Newcombe (17 wins, 2.72 ERA) led the mound crew. Pittsburgh finished in 2nd place, 5 games back, thanks to the hitting of Joe Adcock (.287-27-84) and Jackie Jensen (.256-19-76) and the pitching of the senior circuit's Outstanding Pitcher award winner, Mike Garcia (17 wins, 2.48 ERA). Thanks to the hitting of Smokey Burgess (.304-20-96) and the pitching of Dick Donovan (16 wins, 3.51 ERA, 132 K), the Brooklyn Dodgers edged the Cubs for 3rd place, 6 games behind.

Thanks to the power display by Ed Bailey (4 HRs) and the pitching of both Bob Friend and Larry Jansen, the Cleveland Indians defeated the Milwaukee Braves, 4 games to 1, to win their first world's championship in 26 years.
