May 19, 2002
CHICAGO — Oakland Athletics firstbaseman Mark McGwire joined an exclusive club today, hitting the 600th home run of his big league career.
McGwire's big hit was a solo home run off Chicago White Sox left-hander Jarrod Washburn in the fourth inning, a 401-foot shot to left-center field.
McGwire is only the fourth player in history to hit 600 career home runs behind Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth, and Willie Mays. The 38-year-old, in the final year of a two-year contract, is hitting .257 with three home runs and four RBI in 18 games this season.
