All Star rosters finalized
Five Devil Rays named to squad
July 6, 2002
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — With the All Star Game just a few days away, the final rosters have been set and there are five local players that will be making the trip.
Centerfielder Carlos Beltran, thirdbaseman Scott Rolen, corner infielder/outfielder Aubrey Huff, and pitchers Pedro Martinez and Mark Mulder, were each named to the American League All Star team.
It is the second consecutive All Star selection for Beltran, who is hitting .295 with 13 home runs, 43 RBI, 58 runs, and 12 stolen bases. It is the first nod for Rolen. Along with playing solid defense, Rolen has hit .328 with 12 home runs, 44 RBI and 50 runs for Tampa Bay this year. Huff, who has spent most of the season splitting time between first base and designated hitter, will appear in his second All Star Game. Huff is hitting .317 with 15 home runs and 65 RBI.
After winning the last three Cy Young awards, Martinez was all but a sure thing for this year's All Star Game. Making his fifth appearance, Martinez has earned the honor with a 9-4 record, 2.08 ERA, and 151 strikeouts in 134 innings. Mulder has finally looked to be the pitcher scouts had originally forecasted him to be. The left-hander, who has struggled as of late, is 9-6 with a 2.59 ERA in 17 starts for the Devil Rays.
The Chicago White Sox are also rich in representatives, sending pitcher Troy Percival (1-0, 22 saves, 1.76 ERA), pitcher Keith Foulke (7-1, 4 saves, 2.07 ERA), firstbaseman Frank Thomas (.282, 28 HR, 64 RBI), and outfielders Torii Hunter (.329, 21 HR, 57 RBI) and Cliff Floyd (.279, 19 HR, 44 RBI, 63 R) to the game. The Seattle Mariners are sending four players: pitcher John Riedling (1-0, 16 saves, 1.01 ERA), secondbaseman Jeff Kent (.282, 13 HR, 48 RBI), shortstop Alex Rodriguez (.317, 13 HR, 51 RBI), outfielder Jay Gibbons (.325, 17 HR, 58 RBI). The New York Yankees are sending pitchers Terry Adams (10-2, 2.29 ERA), Andy Pettitte (8-5, 2.50 ERA), and Antonio Osuna (4-2, 25 saves, 3.28 ERA).
Filling out the American League roster: Anaheim Angels secondbaseman Alfonso Soriano (.323, 20 HR, 75 RBI), Boston Red Sox pitcher Matt Herges (3-6, 19 saves, 2.14 ERA) and outfielder Ichiro Suzuki (.359, 2 HR, 34 RBI, 46 R, 20 SB), Cleveland Indians catcher Jorge Posada (.261, 17 HR, 42 RBI), Detroit Tigers utility man Rob Mackowiak (.292, 13 HR, 43 RBI), Kansas City Royals catcher Paul LoDuca (.287, 8 HR, 35 RBI), and shortstop Nomar Garciaparra (.309, 15 HR, 49 RBI), Minnesota Twins pitcher Tomokazu Ohka (9-2, 2.92 ERA), Texas Rangers firstbaseman Jim Thome (.323, 32 HR, 71 RBI), and Toronto Blue Jays pitchers Javier Vazquez (9-6, 2.69 ERA), Robb Nen (2-4, 25 saves, 2.38 ERA)
