Devil Rays sign manager to extension
August 2, 2002
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Tampa Bay Devil Rays will hold onto the only manager the franchise has ever had for at least four more years, signing Christian O'Neal to a contract extension today.
O'Neal signed a four-year extension worth $570,000 annually, keeping him in the manager's office through 2006.
O'Neal is the only manager in Devil Rays history, bringing the expansion club to the playoffs twice in four seasons. The team is currently in a tie with the New York Yankees for first place in the American League East as well as the Wild Card. During his tenure with the team, Tampa Bay has gone 405-351.
The 44-year-old O'Neal had several years as a minor league manager who got his first big league job as manager of the Devil Rays before the franchise played its first game in 1998.
