What you describe sounds not so much a problem with the AI, as much as outcomes generated by the game engine that seem improbable to you. But simple statistics tell you that two players with the same ratings can have pretty dramatically different results over a period time (a whole season even).
So you'd really have to dive into it more to figure out if there is something really "broken" in your team or the way in which the game is playing.
Steve is right. Be specific. How many bases did a 30 speed player steal against that catcher? I mean was it 2, 4, 10 bases? Remember that speed is not the be all. I had a 30 speed guy with 100 steal rating get 25 steals in one season.

Your control pitcher had 15 hits against. How many walks did he allow in that same game?

How good is the division your team is in? If one team is running away with the division, the other teams take the losses.
