I think I've found the problem though. Looks like my root partition is now full and I guess the setup program wasn't able to copy everything to /tmp that it wanted. Ah, that makes perfect sense. I am happy now I understand whats going on... Easy to please, thats me

@steve: you should note in the FAQ for people to check there disk space on ALL platforms as it will stop the installer working if it runs out of space
