I think you're on the right track about ghost players, but when running a test I was still having problems with fictional players. Anyway, having fictional players would kind of defeat the purpose of what I was trying to accomplish, having a minimal amount of minor leaguers which I could keep track of easily. I've had a 'house rule' of a maximum of 48 minor leaguers at the start of any season for the past few versions of OOTP for my solo leagues. This allows me to get rid of the dead weight and become more familiar with each minor leaguer.
