1958 - MLB Year In Review
Ebbets Field felt the wrecker's ball, the Polo Grounds played only to history's ghosts and the west coast had it's first taste of major league baseball. The Dodgers have set up shop at Memorial Coliseum. The huge football stadium had a monsterously vast right field, ranging to 440 feet in the power alley, and a short 251-foot left field target, which had a 40-foot high screen that extended 140 feet to left center. This was designed to prevent a feared flood of cheap home runs. The Giants new home was San Francisco's Seals Stadium, which seated only 22,900. Both teams planned new stadiums. A city-built and owned Candlestick Park received quick approval and a mid-1959 was the targeted time for occupancy. The Dodgers reached an agreement with Los Angeles city officials in which the Dodgers would get the valuable Chavez Revine land where they could build themselves a $12 million stadium. There was a protest and the California Supreme Court had to get involved. The Court ended up passing the final decision in January next year. Unfortunately, the new surroundings weren't lucky for the Dodgers as they continued to sit in the second division of the NL when the season concluded. The Giants, on the other hand, had much better results. Except for a one-month stretch during the early summer, the Giants held the lead and was able to clinch the pennant midway through the final week of the regular season. The team was led by the hitting of the league's batting average champion, Bill White (.333) and the power of slugger Ernie Banks (47 HR, 126 RBI), the NL's MVP. Whitey Ford led the mound staff with a major league leading 22 wins. The Pittsburgh Pirates trailed only San Francisco all season long and finished in second place 2 games behind the Giants. The Bucs were led by the pitching of the NL's Cy Young Award winner, Camilo Pascual (18 wins, 2.34 ERA). The Milwaukee Braves finished 9 games behind San Francisco, in third place, thanks to the arm of Don Drysdale (MLB leading 2.07 ERA).
The race in the AL was almost as uneventful. The Detroit Tigers took the lead in the early going before the Chicago White Sox roared back and took the lead at the end of August. The Pale Hose clinched the AL title a day before the Giants did in the senior circuit. The hitting of Vada Pinson (AL leading .338 average) and Stan Musial (.329) led the way for Chicago. The Detroit Tigers ended up finishing in second place, 3 games back, behind the bat of Willie Mays (25 HR, 113 RBI). The Baltimore Orioles finished third, 4 games behind the front running White Sox, and 2 games ahead of the Kansas City Athletics, who had the AL's MVP, Frank Robinson (.322-47-132) plus sluggers Duke Snider (44 HR, 116 RBI) and Roger Maris (35 HR).
During the World Series, the teams split the first two games, the first two ever at Seals Stadium, then the White Sox took the next two games, behind the pitching of Don Mossi and Robin Roberts. The Giants, faced with elimination, took game #5 behind the bats of Norm Cash and Del Ennis but the White Sox took the next game as Roger Craig shut down the Giants bats.
