In real life players without option years remaining do NOT have to clear waivers to move off the spring training roster back to the minors. By automatically putting all 40-man players on the spring training roster the GM is left with no option in some cases but to irrevocably waive (and therefore risk losing) 40-man players with no option years remaining.
This could be fixed in one of two ways:
1) Not having the AI automatically put all 40-man players on the active roster for spring training and allowing GMs to decide; or
2) Changing the OOTP rules so that players without option years remaining can be demoted after spring training without clearing waivers.
It would also be nice if we could have non-roster invitees to spring training.

Sorry, you are incorrect. This is correctly being modeled in OOTP now. In the past it was incorrect.

You don't need to actually be on the 25-man roster for an option year to be used; being on the 40-man roster in spring training and optioned to the minors before the season is enough to make the season count as an option year.
