2000 Preview
March 31st 2000 - The 20th season of EBL action is about to kick off with perenniel superpowers Sofia and Athens in pursuit of reigning champs Milan.
No significant trades in the off-season, but a couple of big names hit the free-agency market.
Vaino Saraste was re-signed by Sofia despite his meltdown in Game 4 of the European League Series. He will get $32.9M over 7 seasons.
The most expensive contract went to former EL Hitter of the Year, Czieslw Lubelsky, who got $27.8M to commit for 5 years to hometown team Warsaw.
Marcal Assis left Sofia for Brussels for $10.2M over 2 seasons. There were also big contracts for Aleksander Dimmit (Zurich), Sippo Pietarinen (Copenhagen) and Sondre Nyhuus (Glasgow) - with the latter two swapping teams.
A lack of quality pitchers on the market meant that Markus Virta, with his career 84-97 record and 4.05 ERA got $22.6M for 7 season's work from Budapest.
