importing historical players
I have been playing OOTP using fictional players in a modern environment for four years.....just starting to play around with historical players/replay.
I played around with a few players to examine the ratings after import. Being a Cardinal fan, I was interested in taking a look at Gibby.
It looks like it has been mentioned by others (Gambo for example), but I can't get the "pitch repertoire" to import properly. I tried it with unaltered .csv files, and I tried to make my own. Gibson should be something like 1-fastball, 2-slider, 3-curve. From what I've read, I think he was mostly fastball/slider with a 4-seam and a 2-seam fastball. Is it correct that the "1", "0", "2", etc. in the .csv file should represent the pitch ranking for that pitcher?
Additionally, I was a bit underwhelmed by the ratings. I understand that neutralization should be done for pitchers/batters in the run suppressing environment of the 60s, but 1968 was intense! Looking at baseball-reference ratio data, I noticed that Gibby's % hits for extra bases was 17% in '68. His career ratio is 24% (MLB average during career time was 27%). This leads to the question....should isolated power against the pitcher be considered when applying a movement rating? This is problematic for dead ball era pitchers, since the data doesn't seem to exist, but I would not be surprised if the elite pitchers of that era had lower % hits for extra bases than the average. Anyway, it appears logical to me that fewer hits would be driven for extra bases against pitchers with the best movement, and this should apply to more than just home runs. Just wondering what others think.
I have some more concerns about ratings and historical imports, but I will bring those up at a later time.
